Earthquake Websites

Hi everyone, I have been observing earthquate data since sometime before I became public. I am placing websites I check regularly below. In regards to the daily postings on USGS, I am seeing a change in trends and numbers.

The UGSG page below records quakes 4.0 and above around the world, and over 2.5+ in the United States and its territories. It used to be that Alaska averaged about 100 quakes per the last 7 days, and this has greatly increased, particularly the last several months. When I checked today, I saw about the highest I have yet to see, 347 quakes for the past 7 days (168 hours).  You find the details for quakes in the USA by clicking on USA in the index on the left of the page and then continue your exploration.

The world count used to average 100 the last 168 hours too, and that today is again over 200, but the average is more like about 160 I think now. Monjoronson said last April 2007, that we would see at least one 6.0+ quake a week, and its much higher. It is rare to see no 6.0+ quakes in the past 168 hours. Currently it's 4 or 5 I think, because there was a 6.0+ quake a hour ago. And there was just a new earthquake, 5.9, west of Oregon.  I have seen it as high as 12  6.0+ quakes in any 168 hour time period. Activity has definitely increased over the last 3-4 years and a whole lot the last 6 months.

I read somewhere in the Phoenix Journals (which was written many years ago) that we woud see regularly more than 100 quakes 5.0+ a year, and if I multiply just that number last week, by 52, its over 1300. I have done this quite a few times, the numbers of the current week always work out to well over 1000 a year.

If you are checking the California region, be sure once you click on that, to find the additional link to the local site that records the quakes that are under 2.0. It used to be that this added about 25 or so to the number of quakes on the first California/Nevada map, but now there are often well over 100 more of these microquakes, so something is going on. (and today, as I fix a couple typos in here, (April 16,2008), it is now often closer to 200 extra microquakes.)

All the Pages with maps of quakes on USGS has a listing of the actual quakes with detail. And you can also click right on the maps to get larger local pictures, which is particularly interesting to do with California/Nevada maps as more fault lines show, and there are lots of quakes that are not on known fault lines.

This shows a list of quakes the last 168 hours (7 days) that are 4.0+ around the world, and 2.5+ in the USA. However, there are many not recorded on this site. It is not all emcompassing.

http://geofon.gfz-potsdam.de/db/eqinfo.php  This is a good site to look for quakes not recorded on the above USGS site, that are reported from a variety of sites internationally. Most of these quakes on this site are ones over 4.0 so its a good one to check to compare to the USGS site.  For example, on the 14th of this month (same hours used by USGS) there were more than double the quakes reported on USGS.

http://www.emsc-csem.org/   For those of you living in the European/Mediterranean regions, and again, there will be quakes shown here that are 4.0+ that are not on USGS. This site includes activity from its region below 4.0.

http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php  For those of you in Canada. You have a fair amount of quake activity that is less than 4.0. Most of these maps show activity the last 2 weeks.

Take care, Candace
