Obama’s Liberated Libya:Torture & Killings Go Unchecked
Torture & Killings Go Unchecked
Port Orange, FL – Just one year after the uprising in Libya which demanded Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi step down from power, Amnesty International reports that the very rebels the Barack Obama administration once called “peaceful protesters,” continue to kill and torture Libyans with the very weapons the Obama Administration provided them.
Amnesty finds widespread use of torture by Libyan militias
It was during Obama’s State of the Union Address where Obama proudly reminded the American people of his administrations accomplishments which included the “removal Gaddafi.” Obama justified providing weapons to Libyan rebels by saying that said rebels were “peaceful protesters” who were being murdered for simply seeking democracy. What many however chose to ignore or wash over is that many of the Libyan rebels were not simply “peaceful protesters” but in fact were and are today murdering thugs who like Gaddafi have no respect for human rights or human life.
A damning report by Amnesty International says that a year after the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi, Libya‘s militias are “largely out of control”, with the use of torture ubiquitous and the country’s new rulers unable – or unwilling – to prevent abuses.
Even those who make up the National Transitional Council (NTC) the same “leaders” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with (only one day before Gaddafi was captured and murdered in a “white flag” agreement to allow him to leave the country was ignored by US and French air strikes) have failed to do anything or even prosecute these “rebels” for the murderous acts being taken out against the Libyan people. Lets be clear here folks, these acts are being committed against the very Libyan people that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton said had to be provided these weapons in order to protect them from being slaughtered by Gaddafi. These rebels are the same who even before the US provided them with arms were killing and torturing innocent Libyans who refused to or who were to scared to participate in their burning of buildings and beating of Libyans who did nothing more than simply “disagree” with their protests.
Libya’s ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) has “failed to get a grip” on the militia problem, Amnesty says. The NTC has taken no action against fighters from either side involved in human rights abuses, and has not brought to justice those involved in extrajudicial killings – including of Gaddafi and his son Mutassim, captured and executed last October.
Additionally, there is overwhelming evidence that Libya’s victorious militias use torture. Thousands of detainees are being held in various prisons across the country. In at least 12 cases since October, prisoners have been tortured to death, including Omar Brebesh, Libya’s former ambassador to France, who died in Tripoli last month.
Donatella Rovera, the author of the Amnesty report, said she witnessed violence against detainees first hand at one militia jail in Misrata. “I was leaving the place, three guys, two in military clothes, were beating the hell out of two detainees,” she told the Guardian. “When I said: ‘What are you doing?’ he [a captor] said: ‘These guys are not going to be released.’” She said she complained, and later returned to the jail, to find the detainees had been freed. But she said Amnesty’s call for the NTC to take action had fallen on deaf ears. “I have not seen one single case that is being investigated,” she said.
Barack Obama last year said that the US had to protect the Libyan people from being tortured & murdered by its leader, yet a year later Barack Obama would rather not address the fact that Libya’s new leaders are torturing and killing its own people, only this time it is being done with the very weapons Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said were vital to protecting the Libyan people.
“The NTC-led transitional government appears to have neither the authority nor the political will to rein in the militias, many of which are reluctant to submit to the central authority,” Amnesty says.
