Cover-ups and lies: Vaccine injury has been a serious problem since the very beginning.
When we start talking about the vaccine issue we are often asked if we think scientists really intended to cause neuro-immune diseases like autism and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
We think it's the wrong question. You see, although I'm going into my tenth year as a science teacher, prior to that I was an attorney for thirteen years. As an attorney I got to meet a lot of people, hear many conflicting stories, and generally puzzle out who was telling the truth, and if somebody was actively lying, why they were doing it. I found that the vast majority of people didn't "intend" to do the wrong thing, but sometimes events got out of control and they struggled to deal with the fallout. That's when they started to lie. They thought that if they could lie just enough to get themselves out of the present bad situation, the storm would pass, and they'd be able to set things right in the future.
For me the better question is, "How would scientists behave if they believed they were doing something important for humanity, but discovered there were terrible side-effects?" So when I started co-writing a book with Dr. Judy Mikovits, "PLAGUE: One Scientist's Intrepid Search for the Truth About Human Retroviruses and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Autism, and Other Diseases," that was the prism used to sift through the information. When we met in 2010, Judy could not comprehend my concern for her wellbeing because she had crossed the Rubicon as her work began to shed light on the causes of the epidemic of neuro-immune diseases.
We didn't go looking for monsters or deep conspiracies. We went looking for the truth that lay hidden in the data that was beginning to reveal terrible secrets. We found scientists who had believed their work would do good in the world and whose motives were pure. But when those data starting points indicated they were in fact creating a modern day Plague of neuro-immune diseases, we believe the evidence shows these same scientists became lost souls and covered up the truth. Who were the lost souls we found? We found Dr. Maurice Brodie, a Canadian researcher working in New York City who developed an early polio vaccine that was created by passaging the polio virus through mouse brain tissue as a way to weaken the virus. (Attempts to Produce Poliomyelitis in Refractory Laboratory Animals, Experimental Biology and Medicine, March 1, 1935, doi: 10.3181/00379727-32-7876)
Among the other lost souls we found were Dr. John R. Paul, a professor from Yale Medical School and Dr. Leslie Webster from the Rockefeller Institute, who were present in Los Angeles, California in the summer of 1934 to observe a polio outbreak and try to gather important information. They were also present for the first recorded outbreak of chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) among 198 doctors and nurses working at Los Angeles County General Hospital. Many doctors and nurses at the Los Angeles County Hospital had received Brodie's early polio vaccine as well as 7,000 children in North Carolina, Virginia, and California. (Active Immunization Against Poliomyelitis, American Journal of Public Health, February 1936) This early vaccine was given with an "immune serum" designed to boost the body's defenses against pathogens. This immune serum was also preserved with thimerosal, a mercury derivative that was just coming into clinical usage. (Use of Serum and the Routine and Experimental Laboratory Findings in the 1934 Poliomyelitis Epidemic, American Journal of Public Health, September 3, 1934)
Are you starting to assemble the pieces of this puzzle as we did? And as for autism, this is the time the first cases appeared, in children whose parents were involved in the scientific or medical professions, such as Dr. Elizabeth Peabody, co-creator of the "well-baby" visit, which consists of an examination of the child as well as multiple immunizations. Had they been among that first group of 7,000 children who received Brodie's early polio vaccine, passaged through mouse brain tissue and given with a dose of an immune serum preserved with thimerosal? Occam's razor says the simplest answer to a problem is most likely to be the correct one. You've got mouse tissue combined with human tissue to create a vaccine (but that also created a new retrovirus), that vaccine is then injected into people, accompanied by a good helping of mercury. It sounded like a prescription for disaster to us.
And then the trail started to get really interesting. The outbreak of the new disease, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) among the 198 doctors and nurses demanded an investigation. The research was conducted by Dr. A. G. Gilliam, an assistant surgeon for the US Public Health Service. Curiously, Gilliam had just been investigating Brodie's polio vaccine in North Carolina and would come to the conclusion that Brodie's vaccine should be discontinued.
Gilliam's report was delayed for several months and from the historical record there is no explanation for the delay. However, when we spoke to Dr. Byron Hyde, one of the world's foremost experts on chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and the author of a 742 page textbook on the disease, he told us a very interesting story. From Hyde's own investigations he had learned, "In the original document he [Gilliam] said it was caused by this immunization and it was a human transfer of infectious material, so it was actually a great experiment. He had a huge fight with the head of the public health system of the United States and the fight went on for almost six months. Finally, it was agreed that he would be allowed to publish it, as long as they took out the immunization section-because if you put the immunization in, it would set back all Americans on immunizations for years and cause the deaths of many people."
Adding yet another layer of mystery to this puzzle is that those 198 doctors and nurses who first came down with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) were not followed up in subsequent years as would be expected for an outbreak of a new disease. Again, Hyde has an explanation for this silence, something he shared with the journalist, Hillary Johnson in her book Osler's Web, an account Hyde verified to us.
According to Dr. Hyde, the victims of this outbreak received a settlement of approximately six million dollars in 1939 (about $100 million dollars in today's money) and according to the terms of this alleged settlement, were not to discuss the outbreak. All of this sounds very unusual and qualifies as a stark departure from standard scientific practice if one was simply looking for a disease that had sprung from natural causes.
Dr. Maurice Brodie died in May of 1939 at the age of thirty-six of a suspected suicide.
As an attorney I always began with the assumption that people intended to do the right thing, but may not have known how to respond when things started to go wrong. Brodie wanted to alleviate human suffering. Drs. Paul and Webster wanted to do the right thing when they went to observe the Los Angeles polio epidemic of 1934-1935 and also saw the birth of this new disease. Gilliam had already been sniffing around at Brodie's polio vaccine prior to going to Los Angeles to investigate the chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) outbreak. Gilliam tried to write an honest report, but was prevented by his boss. The Brodie polio vaccine was stopped from going into general usage. Six million dollars was allegedly paid to the 198 doctors and nurses of Los Angeles County Hospital who came down with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
In 1953 Dr. G. Stuart of the World Health organization gave a presentation why the use of mouse brain tissue might not be an appropriate medium in which to cultivate viruses for vaccines. Dr. Stuart wrote: "[T]wo main objections to this vaccine have been voiced, because of the possibility that: (i) the mouse brains employed in its preparation may be contaminated with a virus pathogenic for man although latent in mice . . . or may be the cause of a demyelinating encephalomyelitis; (ii) the use, as antigen, or a virus with enhanced neurotropic properties may be followed by serious reactions involving the central nervous system." My co-author, would add a third concern, namely that a mouse virus could recombine with a human virus and evolve into something very dangerous.
The idea that the XMRV retrovirus Dr. Mikovits found in the chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients and 3.75% of the control population might have come from vaccines occurred to other researchers who published their suspicions in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology in January of 2011 in an article entitled "Of Mice and Men: On the Origin of XMRV." They wrote, "One of the most widely distributed biological products that frequently involved mice or mouse tissue, at least up to recent years, are vaccines, especially vaccines against viruses . . . It is possible that XMRV particles were present in virus stocks cultured in mice or mouse cells for vaccine production, and that the virus was transferred to the human population by vaccination."
As an attorney it was my experience that people usually tell the truth, up to the moment they realize something has gone terribly wrong, and then they can tell the most wicked of lies. In my opinion, that realization was reached fairly early in the 1934-1935 chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) outbreak at the Los Angeles County General Hospital. They knew it was either the Brodie vaccine with mouse tissue, or the immune serum preserved with mercury, or some combination of the two. They tried to take care of the injured by paying them six million dollars, and it was more than 20 years until another polio vaccine made its way into general usage.
They tried to do the right thing, but they forgot that in science, as in law, you're supposed to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Because they didn't share what they knew, or at least suspected, other scientists used mouse tissue as a medium in which to grow viruses, and thimerosal is still in many vaccines. The vaccine lies have been told for nearly eighty years. It's time for the truth. So many souls are suffering.
